On Monday 15-May, 16.00-20.00 room 1 and on Tuesday 16-May, 15.00-19.00 room 2, Department of Computer Science and Biomedical Informatics, University of Thessaly, Lamia, Assoc. Professor Flaminia Luccio (Dipartimento di Scienze Ambientali, Informatica e Statistica, Universita Ca’ Foscari Venezia, Italy) will give us two talks in which she will present topics in the area of Distributed Computing from a Theoretical Computer Science and especially Algorithms & Complexity perspective.
Assoc. Professor Flaminia Luccio is visiting the department of Computer Science and Biomedical Informatics from Monday 15-May to Wednesday 17-May.
Undergraduate students with a basic knowledge on Algorithms will be able to easily follow the talks. Postgraduate and PhD students, as well as undergraduate students who are interested in those topics are very welcome to attend.
Talks’ details:
Monday 15/5/2017, 16.00-20.00, room 1:
Title of the talk: Introduction to distributed algorithms
Abstract: In this lecture we will present a basic formal model for distributed computing. We will define the concepts of entities, network environment, and the complexity measures used to evaluate distributed algorithms. We will then consider two important and well known problems in this area: the broadcast problem, i.e., the problem of having one entity that needs to communicate some information to all the other entities in the network, and the leader election problem, i.e., the problem of distinguishing one entity among all the others. We will show how to solve these problems in some specific network topologies.
Tuesday 16/5/2017, 15.00-19.00, room 2:
Title of the talk: Security issues for mobile agents
Abstract: In this lecture we will present a basic formal model for mobile agents in a distributed network. We will define the concepts of entities, network environment, and the complexity measures used to evaluate distributed algorithms with mobile agents. We will then present some security issues related to this setting. In particular, we will present the black hole search problem, i.e., the problem of discovering a harmful host which is located somewhere in the network, and problems related to the presence of a harmful agent in a network, e.g., how to capture a malicious agent than intrudes and moves in a network.
Short CV:
Flaminia L. Luccio received the Laurea cum laude in Scienze dell' Informazione from the University of Pisa, Italy, in July 1993, and the Master of Computer Science (M.C.S.) from the Carleton University of Ottawa, Canada in April 1995. In 1991-92 she spent eight months at the University of Frankfurt am Main, Germany. In March 1999 she received the PhD in Computer Science from the University of Milan, Italy. From September 1998 to October 2006 she was an Assistant Professor at the Dipartimento di Matematica e Informatica of the University of Trieste, Italy. She is presently an associate professor at the Dipartimento di Scienze Ambientali, Informatica e Statistica of the University Ca' Foscari of Venice, Italy.
Her research interests span the area of Theoretical Computer Science and include (but are not limited to) the fields of distributed algorithms, fault tolerant protocols and security.
She has published 17 articles in international journals and more than 50 articles in international conferences’ proceedings.
